Formulation for the prevention of spongy tissue of alphonso mango.

Technologies Detail : An eco-friendly formulation was developed and tested in farmers' fields in the Konkan region for the successful control of the spongy tissue disorder in Alphonso mango. The technology entitled "Eco-safe formulation for the management of spongy tissue in Alphonso mango" involves pre-harvest spray of the environmentally-safe formulation "Saka Nivarak" on fruits twice at 10-day intervals between 50 to 70% maturity stages. The incidence of spongy tissue on sprayed fruits was less than 2% as against 54% in control.

  • An ecofriendly integrated management of B. dorsalis in mango has been standardized, which is mentioned below.
  • 45 days before harvest, the following precautions need to be taken
  • Destroy all fallen fruits at weekly intervals
  • Install six methyl eugenol plywood traps per acre.
  • Plough the soil at the tree basin at frequent intervals.
  • Three weeks before the harvest, spray decamethrin 2.8 EC @ 0.5 ml/l + Azadirachtin (0.3%) 2 ml/lt and take up timely harvest.
  • If fruit fly is very serious (> 5/Surveillance trap), give bait sprays on the tree trunks at weekly interval: (Bait spray is prepared by mixing 100g of jaggery in one litre of water to which 2 mL of deltamethrin (2.8 EC) is added).
  • The harvested fruits may be treated with hot water for 1 hour at 48℃

    Production techniques of Alphonso and Totapuri mango.

    Alphonso: About 75 g N+20g P2O5+ 70 g K2O/tree/year of age from 1stto 10thorchard years and continuation of the 10th year dose in subsequent years recommended for maximum fruit yield Seedlings of nucellar origin from the varieties 'Vellaikulamban' for dwarfing effect and 'Olour' for vigour recommended as rootstocks. Paclobutrazol (0.25g / tree / year of age) as soil drench during October-Novemberenhanced fruit yield, suppressed excessive vegetative vigour and gave early crop by about a fortnight. Continued application of Paclobutrazolfor 3 years found to build up residual influence. Dose needs to be tapered down or discontinued for 1 or 2 years without compromising the beneficial effects High density planting at 1111 trees /ha on 'Olour' rootstock with Paclobutrazol application from 4thyear at 0.125g / tree/ year of age, stabilized by the 10th year resulted in 6 fold increase in productivity. Pruning the trees at 5m ht followed by application of 800g N + 300g P2O5 + 1000g K2O + 50 Kg FYM + 3ml (25% EC) Paclobutrazol / m canopy spread recommended for rejuvenation of old and unproductive trees. Totapuri: Nitrogen @ 50g along with 8.6g P2O5 and 58.1g K2O / tree/ year of age, stabilized by the 10thyear recommended for good growth and fruit yield under rainfed conditions.

    Technologies Detail : Mango blackening caused by sooty blotch and flyspeck (SBFS) complex is a kind of cosmetic skin problem and causes only superficial damage on the mango fruit surface. The fungi that cause them, grow on the surface of the cuticle and do not damage the fruit itself. Dipping of fruits in mango wash @1000ppm having pH of 6.5 for 15 mins removes around 95% blemishes from the fruit surface without any peel injury. This formula was evaluated on five different varieties of mangoes (Alpnonso, Neelum, Amrapalli, Totapuri and Maylepelian) and found to be effective.

    Rejuvenation package for old and unproductive alphonso mango trees.

    Technologies Detail : Pruning at 5 m height with 800 g N + 300 g P2O5 + 1000 g K2O + 50 kg. FYM/tree and two irrigations once at pea stage and another at half grown stage with mulch and Cultar at 4 g a.i/plant was found best for Alphonso mango which recorded fruit yield of 148.4 kg/tree, whereas, control recorded a fruit yield of 84.6 kg/tree. Pruning 3rd order branches 30 cm from origin improved the fruit yield of old unproductive Alphonso mango compared to un-pruned control.

    Nucellar seedlings of ?vellaikulumban? and ?olour? varieties are identified as potential rootstocks for intensive cultivation of ?Alphonso? mango.

    Major nutrient requirements of Alphonso mango under rainfed conditions.

    Technologies Detail : Nutritional requirements of mango cultivars namely Alphonso and Totapuri were worked out. A dose of 100 g each of N, P2O5 and K2O/plant/ year of age was found to be optimum for Alphonso. In case of Totapuri 50 g N/plant/year of age was found to be optimum whereas, P and K application did not affect the fruit yield nor growth of Totapuri mango.

    Paclobutrazol application for regular bearing in Alphonso mango.

    Technologies Detail : Paclobutrazol soil application @ 5 g a.i per plant for 15-20 years old Alphonso doubled the fruit yield as compared to control Paclobutrazol @ 5 g a.i per plant recorded mean fruit yield of 49.5 kg / plant (with an early harvest of 210 days) compared to control which recorded fruit yield of 24.5 kg / plant. Fruit quality parameters were not affected by the Paclobutrazol application.

    Integrated water and nutrient management in mango.

    Technologies Detail : Drip irrigation of mango orchards to replenish 40% of evaporation losses (20-25 litres/plant/day when the evaporation is 8 mm and the canopy area covered is around 6.25M2) increased the fruit set and yield (upto 12%). Supplying the soluble straight fertilizers (N & K) as Urea and Muriate of Potash through drip irrigation at 75% of the recommended dose of fertilizer resulted in yields comparable to that of 100% of recommended dose of fertilizer-a saving of nearly 25% in the fertilizer use.

    High density planting.

  • Amrapali has been recommended for closer planting (2.5 m x 2.5 m) in a triangular system.
  • One thousand and six hundred (1,600) plants/ha can be accommodated compared to only 80-100 plants/ha for any commercial cultivar planted at 10 to 12 m in a square system.
  • A grower can harvest yield as high as 22 tonnes/ha in the 10th year of fruiting.
